Motorized Outdoor Shade Systems
Every outdoor application is different. We install four types of motorized exterior shade systems to cover any project.

Pergola Drop Shades
The gold standard for pergola shade. Motors mount inside the header beam; fabric rolls down between posts to create walls of shade. Available in see-through solar fabric (1–14% openness factor) or full blackout for cinema-style outdoor entertaining.
Up to 20 ft wide × 14 ft tall per shade | $600–$2,800 per drop

Motorized Exterior Roller Screens
Wall- or soffit-mounted screens for patios, lanais, storefronts, and window openings. Twin-guide side channels prevent fabric flutter and maintain tension in coastal breezes. Block up to 97% of UV while preserving your view.
Up to 16 ft wide × 14 ft tall | $500–$1,800 per opening

Motorized Retractable Awnings
Articulated arm awnings extend up to 16 feet from the wall, creating shade without any vertical supports. Perfect for concrete patios where posts aren't allowed. Retract fully when not in use—zero visual impact on your architecture.
Projection up to 16 ft | Up to 24 ft wide | $2,200–$6,500

Commercial Patio Shade Systems
Restaurant patios, hotel pool decks, rooftop bars, and resort cabanas. High-cycle motors rated for commercial use (50,000+ cycles), heavy-duty guide tracks, and group control systems let staff operate all panels simultaneously from a single switch.

Wind Sensors & Sun Sensors — The Smart Automation Layer
Sensors are what separate a motorized shade from a truly automatic outdoor system. They're not optional in San Diego—Santa Ana wind events and fast-moving marine layer burn-off demand automated responses.
Wind Sensor (Somfy Eolis / Lutron SunBlind)
Mounts on roof or pergola. Measures wind speed every 3 seconds. When gusts exceed the set threshold (typically 25–30 mph), all shades connected to the sensor retract immediately—overriding any other command. Shades will not re-deploy until wind drops below threshold for 10+ minutes. Protects fabric and motors from storm damage.
Sun Sensor (Somfy Sunis / Lutron SunBlind)
Measures lux levels on a specific façade. When solar radiation on that face exceeds the set threshold, shades deploy automatically. When the sun moves off that face (or clouds roll in), shades retract. Combine with a timer so shades never deploy before 8 AM or after sunset.
Smart Home Integration
All sensor events are visible in the TaHoma, Lutron, or PowerView app. You can create scenes: “Good Morning” raises all shades; “Movie Night” drops pergola shades and dims lights simultaneously. Works with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.
What Makes San Diego Outdoor Shade Installations Unique
18 years installing outdoor shades from Oceanside to Chula Vista has taught us exactly what works here and why.
Marine Layer & Morning Overcast
San Diego's coastal marine layer burns off by mid-morning, meaning outdoor shades often need to deploy rapidly as the sun breaks through. Sun sensors react to lux levels and trigger deployment automatically—no manual operation required.
Santa Ana Wind Events
Wind sensors (Somfy Eolis, Lutron SunBlind) measure wind speed and retract shades when gusts exceed the programmed threshold (typically 25 mph). This protects fabric from stress tears and prevents the motor torque limiter from triggering. Critical for all motorized outdoor shades in San Diego.
South & West Sun Angles
Most San Diego patios face south or west. Solar fabric openness factor selection matters here: 1% or 3% openness for south-facing afternoon sun, 5–10% for morning east-facing applications. We measure your sun angle and recommend the right balance of glare control, heat reduction, and view-through.
Salt Air & Corrosion
Within 3 miles of the coast (La Jolla, Del Mar, Pacific Beach, Coronado, Mission Beach), hardware must be marine-grade. We specify stainless-steel fasteners, powder-coated aluminum tubes, and salt-air rated bearing caps. All outdoor motors are at minimum IP44 rated; we recommend IP55 for oceanfront properties.
HOA Compliance
Most San Diego master-planned communities (Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Del Mar Mesa) have architectural review requirements. We provide HOA submittal packages including product cut sheets, fabric color samples, installation diagrams, and manufacturer spec sheets. Most applications are approved in 2–4 weeks.
Restaurants, Hotels & Commercial Properties
A shaded outdoor dining area in San Diego is worth significant additional revenue. We work with restaurants, hotels, resorts, and corporate campuses to install high-cycle motorized patio shade systems built for daily commercial use.
- High-cycle motors rated 50,000+ open/close cycles (20+ years at 6 cycles/day)
- Group control panels — one switch operates all patio shades simultaneously
- Staff override override remotes — managers can retract all shades from one remote
- Timer-based operation — auto-deploy at 11 AM, retract at sunset
- Wind sensor protection standard on all commercial installs
- Certificate of Insurance (COI) provided; licensed CA contractor #945572
- Commercial maintenance contracts available at discounted rates

Motorized Outdoor Shade FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do motorized outdoor patio shades cost in San Diego?
Motorized outdoor patio shades range from $600–$1,800 per opening for standard pergola drop shades, $1,200–$3,500 for large patio roller screens, and $2,500–$6,000+ for full pergola automation systems with wind and sun sensors. Commercial installations (restaurants, hotels) are quoted by project. We provide free on-site estimates.
What's the difference between pergola drop shades and exterior roller screens?
Pergola drop shades are designed to hang vertically from a pergola or overhead structure, rolling down within the beam pockets to create walls of shade. Exterior roller screens mount above a window or opening and roll down on a track. Both can be motorized. Pergola drop shades are ideal for open-air structures; exterior roller screens are better for covering specific windows or doorways.
Do motorized outdoor shades work with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit?
Yes. Somfy TaHoma, Lutron Caseta, and Hunter Douglas PowerView systems all offer smart home integration. You can control outdoor shades via voice commands, the app, your phone, or schedules. Sun sensors and wind sensors can also trigger automatic movement independent of smart home hubs.
Will outdoor motorized shades hold up to San Diego's marine layer and coastal salt air?
Yes—outdoor shade fabrics are specifically rated for exterior use. We use fabrics with UV stabilizers, salt-air resistance, and anti-mold coatings. Motor components from Somfy and Lutron are sealed for outdoor use. We recommend wiping tubes and guides annually and retracting shades during Santa Ana wind events exceeding the wind sensor threshold (typically 25–30 mph).
Can motorized patio shades be installed on an existing HOA-approved pergola?
Most HOA pergolas accommodate motorized drop shades without structural modification—the motor tube mounts inside the header beam pocket. We provide HOA submittal documentation including product specs, fabric color samples, and installation drawings. Most San Diego HOAs approve motorized shades when installed within existing approved structures.
How long does installation take?
A single motorized pergola drop shade typically takes 2–4 hours. A full 4-panel pergola motorization with wind sensor and smart hub takes 6–8 hours. Restaurant and commercial patio projects are typically completed in 1–2 days. All electrical rough-in should be done before our visit; we provide wiring specs in advance.
Do you service motorized outdoor shades after installation?
Yes. We service all brands we install and many we didn't. Common services include motor replacement, fabric re-rolling, guide track realignment, sensor calibration, and remote programming. We offer maintenance contracts for commercial properties at discounted rates.
